How to fix missing bleed in a PDF
Short answer
Fix missing bleed by rebuilding the design with artwork past the trim, or by generating it from the edge: mirroring the artwork outward where it runs to the trim. Check the result wherever text, a logo or a border sits close to the edge; mirrored, it repeats in the bleed. If that is not acceptable, ask for a corrected file or agree a visible margin.
Confirm the file actually lacks bleed
Open the PDF and look for TrimBox and BleedBox. If those boxes are missing or were synthesised by a viewer, you cannot prove bleed from the file alone, which is common with Canva and office exports. A free bleed check that says “unverified” is more useful than a false pass.
- Check whether TrimBox / BleedBox exist
- Measure whether media extends past trim by the required amount (often 3 mm)
- Note edges that stop at trim (white borders, photos that end abruptly)
Safe automatic fixes
When artwork already reaches the trim edge, bleed can be generated by extending or mirroring that content outward to the amount your profile requires. That does not change the design the customer approved; it only protects the cut.

When you must send it back
If the design includes a deliberate border, text too close to trim, or a photo that does not fill the page, inventing bleed would alter the look. Report the affected edges, ask for a file built with bleed, or agree to print with a visible margin. Then re-check the replacement file before production.
